THE FIRST INVERSION
It is not always necessary to use the Root of every Chord for a Bass Note. When a Member of a Chord other than the Root is used in the Bass, it is said to be an Inversion of the Chord. When the Third of any Chord is used in the Bass, the Chord is said to be in the First Inversion.
As an example take the Chord of C Major, place the Third in the Bass instead of the Root, and let the Root replace the Third as one of the Upper Voices, thus: |

In the following exercise let the student write out, in the same manner, the Octave Position of each Chord in the Scale of C and follow it in each case by the First Inversion of the same Chord. |

Play these many times contrasting the Position with the Inversion. Train the ear, so that the Inversion may be readily distinguished whenever heard.
Let the student analyze the following exercises, writing above each Chord its Name, and its Position or Inversion. |
